Frequently asked questions

Where do you teach?

I go to students’ houses around the areas of Merrylands. If you live anywhere within 5-10 minute drive from Merrylands, I should be able to teach at your place. Please feel free to ask if you are unsure if I am available in your area or not.

Can I go to your place?

I used to live in Merrylands but recently relocated to Rouse Hill. All of my students are still around the suburbs of Merrylands. Therefore, I prefer to go to my students' place to teach, and it will be difficult for you to come to my place (approximately 30 minutes drive).

What do I need to get the first lesson started?

We will need a piano, digital piano or keyboard at your place to get the first lesson started.

How should I pay you?

You can pay me at the end of each lesson.

Can I pay you in advance and get a discount?

The short answer is no. The reason is that it will be very likely for us to have arguments about money, which I certainly don’t want it to happen. Therefore, I prefer to be paid at the end of each lesson. In this way, it is clear that I don’t owe you or you don’t owe me money.

Can we have a trial lesson?

Yes, you are welcome to ask for a trial lesson. Normally, a trial lesson is 20 minutes and costs $20.

How long should a lesson be?

We generally consider a student’s age. For children who are around 5 years old, 30 minute lessons will be sufficient, as they lose their concentration easily. For students who are around 12 years old, parents may consider enrolling them in 45 minute lessons. One hour lessons are suitable for students who are very keen to learn, adults or families that have two to three kids.

Also, it is important to consider your budget. Obviously, your financial budget will have an impact on how long the lessons will be. If you have a tight budget, you may consider having lessons fortnightly. Please let me know and I will try to match you with other students who are also having lessons fortnightly.

Do I have to buy any book?

For beginners, I will provide my students with books to start with. The books that I provide will generally be sufficient for my students to practise for the first year. Parents may expect to buy books after we have finished learning the books that I provide for my students.

Also, parents are expected to buy exam pieces and scale workbook if their children are going to pubic exam.

How can I cancel a lesson?

I understand it is totally reasonable that people have to cancel their lessons due to various reasons such as family events, school events, important meetings and doctor appointments etc. As long as you send me an SMS or give me a phone call prior to the lesson, we will be able to leave the lesson to next week and you don’t need to pay me for that day.

However, I do expect that my students are committed to learning music as a regular basis because it is unfair to me and other people who want to learn if I allocate the time slot to you and you are not going to use it.

Will the lessons still be on during school holidays?

It entirely depends on whether you want it or not. Some people choose to keep the lessons going during school holidays because their children are sitting for public exam shortly after the school holiday or they simply don’t want their children to lose their skills.

However, others may want to have a break during school holidays. It is totally fine for me. The bottom line is that I will still be available in Sydney to offer lessons during most of the school holidays.

What is your availability?

My availability changes from time to time. Therefore, please send me an e-mail or give me a call for my latest availability.

Do you prepare students for AMEB exams?

Yes, I do. I have various students going to the AMEB exams, from preliminary grade to grade 8.

Can I just have one or two lessons with you because I just need a bit help on a specific topic?

If you are an adult and have a specific topic, such as how to harmonise a melody, that you want to learn but are not committed to regular lessons, you are welcome to ask for consultation lessons.

The advantages of consultation lessons are that you don’t need to attend lessons every week and they are tailored to meet what you want to learn. You can have one or two lessons and then study on your own until you think you need further help from me.

However, consultation lessons can only be done outside the normal lessons timetable unless I have a time slot available. In other words, you may expect to have the lesson at night. Again, please feel free to send me an e-mail and I will let you know more.

What should I do if I want to quit the music program?

Every student stops taking lesson at some point. Ideally, this decision is made thoughtfully with plenty of discussion between the teacher, parent, and student so that lessons can cease with a positive sense of closure.  For this reason, the teacher asks for one month’s notice prior to discontinuing lessons. However, the teacher respects the student’s right to end lessons at any time.

Note: At the discretion of the teacher, students may be dismissed at any time if they have unpaid tuition, an excess amount of absences/unprepared lessons, or if they show a lack of interest.
